Blog 172 – January: A New Leaf

January 18, 2025

January 2025

Quote- “The New Year begins in January, offering a chance to turn over a new leaf”- Unknown.

Here we go again? That can feel like the usual question when a new year dawns. I hope like me, you have just about got your head around writing that it is 2025! I think January can be given a bad press- cold days, minimal daylight, not much going on and money is mostly spent from Christmas. However, it is actually a jewel of a month.

It is a month to look ahead to the unwritten (literally for a Literature student/writer) year ahead. I like to think it is a blank canvas and we can have a world of possibilities with what we do with it. I liked the quote for this month of the “chance to turn over a new leaf” [Unknown]. It is a great metaphor of how any struggles, challenges or other tests from the past year can be forgotten. I believe that resolutions can be fruitless, unless they are grounded in genuine intention to happen. I said to people that I will continue trying to be my best, most caring self to others and I know I can do this.

From a literary point of view, I have had some time off from studies to read a book for pleasure- I know been a while!! I read the fantastic Miranda Hart’s book (review to follow another month), and loved her words on selfcare. In the theme of new year, she speaks of setting kind daily targets for ourselves. Sometimes even a short walk and fresh air can be so good, and all we feel like doing. I have spent some time thinking how to write this blog, because January deserves a positive glow up!

My intention is to continue trying to read for pleasure and note things that can weave into my writing. January gives the time to slow down and plan out hopes for the year. This can be as simple as hoping to visit a new area locally and discover where you live more. I value the sunny days and daylight highly, because it boosts us through the longer nights.

I hope 2025 brings everyone something new, exciting and unexpected in good ways. As a writer, this is the month to think of new material through the places you will go and maybe even the people you plan to meet. Everyday, even in January, brings the opportunity to develop a thought that can go into writing.

I want to spend the last part of the last part of this month’s blog, thinking about how important this fresh start is. When we get to December, the month not only goes fast for the festive season, but also the year is its oldest by then. The new year week is the crossover of the old and new. I like the way you start the cycle again, of birthdays and unique celebrations to the new year. Speaking of such, two notable literature anniversaries on 2025 are-

  • 250 years since the birth of Jane Austen
  • 150 years since the birth of Samuel Coleridge Taylor

To paraphrase Miranda, this time is unique and will only happen once in history, so that is a reason to celebrate this new year and what is in store for us this year.!
