Quote: “Isn’t life,” she stammered, “Isn’t life-“ But what life was she couldn’t explain. No Matter. He quite understood. “Isn’t it, darling?”- Katherine Mansfield
This blog will look at the life and bio of Katherine Mansfield, who was one of the greatest short story writers. Katherine was born in New Zealand and her bio information is-
- Born 14th October 1888
- Died 9th January 1923 (34 Years Old)
- Famous short stories- The Garden Party, The Doll’s House, A Cup of Tea, Bliss
- Short story expert
- Part of the celebrated Bloomsbury artists group
Katherine was especially young when she died in consideration to her continuing popularity and fame, 102 years after her death. The way she created her short stories with carefully impacting and powerful words, is one of the reasons for her enduring status. I like how her stories use such beautiful descriptions, in regard to objects and times of the day within a domestic setting. The Garden Party is a fantastically constructed short story, which makes the point of class divisions and the chances of those who help them. The guests at the garden party are wealthy and do not seem to care when an accident happens outside the walls, in the poorer area. Laura acts as a bridge between her wealthy lifestyle, but cares to help those who are less fortunate than her. It is an interesting study that Mansfield uses to look at the care people show to each other.
One of my absolute favourite quotes is at the end of the story, and what I have chosen for this blog. When Laura says, “Isn’t life,” she stammered, “Isn’t life-”But what life was she couldn’t explain.” It is a perfectly expressed lack of words to describe life, which she cannot “explain.” It is too much to describe in one or two words. I feel this captures how we can all feel when describing life.
Mansfield was part of the famed Bloomsbury club for artists, which included Virginia Woolf. It was a group of associated British writers, intellectuals, philosophers and artists. Katherine found herself slightly excluded from the group because she was more a writer and not sharing the same traits as other group members. The group did give Katherine the opportunity to get to know some of the prominent authors of the day including Woolf, so did have some benefit.
Katherine only published most of her short stories in 1922, the year before she died. This meant that she did not get to see how her works were received in the same way that other authors did. However, her legacy continues to inspire countless fans for her skill at creating a powerful short story. Each short story contains a key message to be understood and Mansfield was able to make every word count, so the short stories had the most impact and still do today.
